This book is the exhibition catalog for "Interstitial Life," documenting a socially engaged art project I co-organized with 13 participants in Boston. The project aimed to foster cross-species connections between Boston's Chinatown residents, passersby, and pioneering plants.

Pioneer plants are those that are among the first to grow in disturbed spaces on the periphery of environments such as buildings, highways, and walls. This project focuses on the ailanthus tree, viewing it as a "living monument." The presence of these migratory plants in the American urban environment reflects a social mindset centered on privatization and property-driven development. They simultaneously witness, commemorate, and reawaken moments of spontaneous resistance, carrying multiple layers of cultural, familial, and personal memories to challenge the status quo of neoliberal urbanization.

It documents events that occurred in Boston's Chinatown and surrounding areas during the project's development, and also compiles previously unpublished fragments and research materials. I consider this book a secret manual, guiding how to draw inspiration and wisdom from the resilience and adaptability of the ailanthus tree to survive in an unconventional way within a highly modernized urban ecosystem.
