De tuin, het beest, de geest is a short story by Nina Polak that was translated by David Colmer. The publication is part of the Schermerschijn series. It is about two women, artists and writers, who flee the city and buy a house in the Groningen countryside, with an overgrown garden. One person wants to work in the garden, the other wants to narrate it. Inside the house, a framed photo of an enormous whale hangs on the wall, which has symbolic value for the relationship between the two women. With her characteristic light and at the same time poignant touch, Nina Polak knows how to sketch a contemporary situation, in which the re-experiencing of nature is predominant.
