Fakkeldrager (‘Torch-bearer’) is an ode to rap culture in the nearby Belgian town of Genk and was compiled by the Flemish writer Wim Peumans. In the former mining town, the foreign workers’ various languages have fused into a slang now spoken by young people of both migrant and native Belgian origin. Peumans fell in love with this language, and has selected texts by six rappers from various generations and ethnic backgrounds.
