Performance always occupies a territory, both ideal and physical, understood as a site of creation and occurrence: the artist's studio and the home environment; the gallery; alternative and informal spaces; institutions, such as museums and major exhibitions. The centrality of the body affirmed by performance raises questions of identity and self-representation, politics, anthropology, myth and art history, and the private dimension as a strategy of resistance and self-affirmation. The volume presents a series of texts, photographs, drawings, sketches, and documents from contemporary magazines and publications, videos, and oral histories that visually narrate the ephemeral artistic practices of performance, practices that escape linear processes of historicization.
Lara Conte is Associate Professor of Contemporary Art History at the Department of Philosophy, Communication, and Performance at Roma Tre University. In 2007, she received her PhD in History of Visual and Performing Arts from the University of Pisa, with a thesis entitled " Antiform, Process Art, Earth Art, Arte Povera: Developments and Diffusion. Towards an Internationalization of Post-Minimalist Neo-Avant-Garde Art. 1966-1970" (National Prize for the History and Criticism of Contemporary Italian Art, sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the MAXXI).
